Synesthesia The Color of Sound Curators: Domenica Brockman and Marina Delaney The seventh annual Cayuga Arts Collective Spring Show took place at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts June 3-July 28, 2023. Every year we invite established and emerging artists to take part in celebrating the creative spirit that fills our community. This year we focussed on the theme of synesthesia, specifically as it relates to art and sound. To this end asked members to submit work where aspects of music and/or sound served as an influence or acted as an element in their work. The connection between art and music was first explored by early modernist painters Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian, who saw their abstract imagery as an out picturing of musical compositions and who recognized the shared sensory language between the two disciplines. For example, the term ‘chroma’, when applied to the visual arts, refers to color intensity; when applied to music, it refers to pitch. The term ‘chiaroscuro’, when used in art, describes a technique of light and shadow, while in music it refers to the coupling of bright sounds with subdued tones. To highlight these overlapping concepts TCFA partnered with Opera Ithaca for a special event, "The Color of Sound in Song" that was held at the Conservatory during our exhibit on Sunday, July 16, 3-4pm. This program was sponsored by CFCU Community Credit Union. This show is open only to CayAC members and every member is guaranteed at least one spot. Submission Guidelines will be available in April. For the duration of the exhibit, we will run a “People’s Choice Award”. First prize is $100. This year Leslie Ihde won for her painting Blue. Congratulations Leslie! IMPORTANT DATES - 2024
